Kink-antikink unbinding transition in the two-dimensional fully frustrated XY model
The two-dimensional s2Dd fully frustrated XY sFFXYd model 1,2 is one of the most intriguing of the “simple” statistical mechanics models. The doubly degenerate checkerboard pattern of vortices in the ground state leads to an Isinglike discrete Zs2d symmetry in addition to the KosterlitzThouless-like continuous Os2d symmetry associated with the uniform rotation of all phase angles.3 It remains c...
متن کاملKink-antikink, trapping bags and five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity
Five-dimensional Gauss-Bonnet gravity, with one warped extra-dimension, allows classes of solutions where two scalar fields combine either in a kink-antikink system or in a trapping-bag configuration. While the kink-antikink system can be interpreted as a pair of gravitating domain walls with opposite topological charges, the trapping-bag solution consists of a domain wall supplemented by a non...
متن کاملKink-boundary collisions in a two-dimensional scalar field theory
In a two-dimensional toy model, motivated from five-dimensional heterotic M theory, we study the collision of scalar field kinks with boundaries. By numerical simulation of the full two-dimensional theory, we find that the kink is always inelastically reflected with a model-independent fraction of its kinetic energy converted into radiation. We show that the reflection can be analytically under...
متن کاملKink - Antikink Interactions in the Double Sine - Gordon Equation
As 71 is varied over the range ~ < ~/< ~c, this potential exhibits a variety of structures. Although in later sections we shall discuss these different structures in some detail [2], it is important here to provide a qualitative feeling for them. Clearly, for ~ _+ oo, 'V(~) reduces to a sine-Gordon [SG] form for q~, while for 71 = 0, it leads to a SG form for q~/2. Thus in both these limits the...
متن کاملObservation of locked optical kink-antikink spatial shock waves.
We report the first experimental observation of optical spatial shock-wave pairs. The shock waves consist of two coupled kink and antikink beams that remain locked to each other throughout propagation in a nonlinear diffusion-driven photorefractive crystal. These coupled shock-wave pairs move undistorted at angles that fall outside their original angular sector of propagation.
